Grant Stephen Lockenbach,
20, died in a climbing accident in North Georgia on February 12, 2011. Grant was born in Atlanta, Georgia and moved
to Florida in 1997. He excelled in school academically and eventually
graduated from DeLand High School in 2006 with an International
Baccalaureate Degree. While in high school, he was also a church youth group
leader through Young Life. He continued to be extremely involved in his
church activities, which eventually led to his being chosen to be the
president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the University of Florida.
Grant was a junior at UF and finishing up a degree in sociology. As a freshman he signed up for the National Guard and had completed Basic Training, Advanced Training and Airborne School. His career aspirations include these diverse interests and ranged from becoming a Chaplain to either a FBI or DEA agent.
He had multiple other activities he engaged in regularly, including rock climbing, weight lifting, road trips, helping at a soup kitchen and having recently completed a marathon. He leaves behind his parents, Barry and Patti Lockenbach; and his younger brother, Alex.
A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 724 North Woodland Blvd., DeLand, FL on Friday, February 18, 2011 at 3:00 PM with a visitation from 1:00 PM until service time. There will also be a community gathering at the church after a private, family only graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Grant Lockenbach Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 1002, DeLand, FL 32724-9998, to provide scholarships through Young Life and the FCA.
He was loved and he will be greatly missed.
